112 before you travel. For local orientation, Infotourist Meteora is at Patriarchou Dim. & Vlachava, +30 24323 50245. Nearest full hospital is the General Hospital of Trikala — about 25 minutes (Infotourist; 5th Health Region listings). Area code 24320.
Pharmacies, hospitals and prescriptions
Greek pharmacies (φαρμακείο) show a green cross. Duty rotas: еоф.гр — search by region and date. Kalambaka has town pharmacies; none on the monastery pillars. Carry any prescription you need on the stairs.
Kalambaka Health Centre (Κέντρο Υγείας Καλαμπάκας), Ioanninon 82, +30 24323 50000 (Infotourist). For a full hospital, go to the
Bring enough medication plus a buffer. A copy of the prescription helps; pharmacists cannot always substitute a foreign script. Taxi to Trikala if 166 is not the right path for a non-emergency referral — radio +30 24320 22310 (confirm at hotel).
Cash is required at monastery gates — typically €5 per house, no combined ticket. Children under 12 commonly free — confirm at each gate. ATMs in Kalambaka; ниједан на стенама (Infotourist).
Town hotels and many tavernas take cards. Kiosks, some coaches and village tills still want notes. Carry €20–40 in small bills daily on top of monastery cash. Your bank sets ATM fees — decline dynamic currency conversion.
Tipping is not obligatory. Rounding up 5–10% for table service is appreciated. No tip expected for KTEL tickets or café counter orders. Indicative dinner band €12–22, coffee €2–3.50 (2026 visitor bands, not a printed tariff).
SIM cards, eSIM and Wi-Fi
EU/EEA mobiles usually roam in Greece under “Roam Like at Home” — check your operator’s fair-use policy before mapping the monastery road all day (EU rules, Aug 2026). Coverage in Kalambaka and Kastraki is normal mainland; hairpins can dip.
Non-EU visitors buy prepaid SIMs from Cosmote, Vodafone or Nova — passport required. This guide names no Kalambaka shop. eSIM works if the phone supports it; activate on hotel Wi‑Fi. Infotourist (+30 24323 50245) can point you to town services, not a phone kiosk list.
Hotel and café Wi‑Fi is common in town. Treat public networks as untrusted for banking. Download KTEL times and hellenictrain.gr screenshots before you lose signal on a path. Area code 24320 for local calls.
Tap water, power sockets and pharmacies
Tap water is widely drunk in town, typical Greek mainland. Bottled is available in Kalambaka if you prefer. Carry a bottle on the circuit — gates and paths are not a café strip (Infotourist: no cafés at the monasteries). Pharmacies: eof.gr duty finder.
50 Hz, Type C/F (two round pins) — same as mainland Greece. UK and US plugs need adapters. Area code 24320. Infotourist: Patriarchou Dim. & Vlachava, +30 24323 50245.
Is Meteora safe? What to actually watch for
Kalambaka and Kastraki are small and generally calm. The real risks are stairs, heat and missing the last bus — not nightlife crime. Wear shoes with grip. Holy Trinity is the hardest access (~140 steps plus path). Great Meteoron has a long stair of its own.
Dress code is enforced: covered shoulders; men no shorts; women no trousers/sleeveless — wrap skirts at most gates (Infotourist + Great Meteoron). Staff will turn you away. No combined ticket; cash only.
Watch bags at viewpoints when coaches unload. The rocks have drop-offs — keep children inside railings. Emergency 112; Health Centre +30 24323 50000. Tourist police 1571 or +30 24320 76600 (travel.gr listings).
Safe at night: areas, taxis and common sense
Town streets in Kalambaka stay ordinary after dark. Kastraki is quieter. Walk lit routes. The monastery road has no night loop — confirm last KTEL at the station. After that, licensed taxi +30 24320 22310 (widely published; confirm at hotel).
Avoid unmarked cars offering a “cheap monastery sunrise” from the plateia. Agree the fare before you ride. Keep a torch for Kastraki lanes. This is not a club strip; it is a small Thessaly town under the rocks.
If you drink, plan the taxi first. Hotel staff know the radio number. For anything serious: 112. Tourist police +30 24320 76600. Infotourist hours are daytime — do not count on the office after closing.
Local etiquette and quiet hours
These are working monasteries, not a theme park. Speak quietly inside katholika. No drones over houses — follow posted rules. Photography limits vary; ask at the door. Dress code is not optional.
Greeks greet with Kalimera / Kalispera. A little Greek helps in Kastraki more than on a coach. Residential quiet hours are taken seriously: keep music down mid-afternoon and late at night near apartments. Monastery midday closures (St Stephen’s split hours) are for the community, not your itinerary.
Orthodox Easter is busy and dates move — do not hardcode a picnic on Holy Week without checking. Prophet Elias fair around 20 July fills Kalambaka (meteorapyligeopark.gr). Meteora of Art runs June–September 2026 (dimosmeteoron.com). Respect processions; do not block gates.
Public holidays and what closes
KTEL still runs on many holidays at reduced frequency — check ktel-trikala.gr rather than assuming the €2.00 loop is full. Hellenic Train: hellenictrain.gr. Infotourist +30 24323 50245 for the local picture.
Twelve phrases that earn goodwill
English works in hotels and at gates. Greek still matters in Kastraki tavernas:
- Калимера — Good morning
- Kalispera —
— How much?
One ticket, please
- Pou íne to…?
- Thélo taxí —
At a gate, “ena ticket” plus cash is enough. For the bus, the Kalampaka–Meteora fare is €2.00 (ktel-trikala.gr, checked Aug 2026) — you can point at the price if Greek fails.
