Kalambaka during the Prophet Elias fair season Past · ~19–23 Jul

Prophet Elias fair

Feast 20 July; eve plus about five days. Stalls and fairground in Kalambaka. Source: meteorapyligeopark.gr.

Those two are the only 2026 dates we treat as official. Orthodox Easter is observed every year — the calendar moves; do not invent 2027 liturgy times. Book rooms for Easter and for July fair nights early. Monastery visits continue through both; modest dress still applies at the gates (€5 typically, confirm on the day).

Calendar

Season by season

Spring: Orthodox Easter if it falls here — processions and full houses; dates move. Shoulder hiking weather. Summer (Jun–Sep): Meteora of Art 2026 fills the municipal calendar; July adds the Prophet Elias fair. Hottest circuit days — start early. Autumn: programme ends 30 September; rooms ease after August. Winter: town stays open for residents; some monastery hours shorten — check locally / Infotourist, not guessed here.

Crowd pressure tracks coaches more than concerts. An August Saturday with Athens day-trippers is busier than a June weekday concert. Weather and price month-by-month: Best Time to Visit.

Traditions

Religious and civic traditions

This is a living monastic landscape. Orthodox Easter is the year’s main religious marker — services, processions, and a town that books out. Dates follow the Orthodox calendar; confirm the year you travel. Do not invent liturgy times. Prophet Elias (20 July) is the summer feast with a multi-day fair around it (meteorapyligeopark.gr).

At the six active houses, visitors are guests. Modest dress; follow posted photography rules; keep voices down. Quiet hours near the monasteries apply on festival nights too. Civic events sit in Kalambaka and the wider Municipality, not inside katholika. If a listing is not on dimosmeteoron.com or the geopark page, treat the date as unconfirmed.

Tickets

How to buy tickets

Meteora of Art: start at the official announcement — dimosmeteoron.com 3951-2026-70 (Municipality of Meteora). Some events are free outdoor gatherings; paid concerts sell through the municipal channel — check that page, not a tour-bus flyer. Prophet Elias fair is a street panigyri — no ticket, food and stalls paid on the night (meteorapyligeopark.gr).

Monastery gates are separate: typically €5 cash each, confirm at the gate. Theopetra Cave €5 / €3, 08:30–15:30, closed Tuesday (odysseus.culture.gr). No festival pass covers the rocks. Easter church services are free; arrive early. Hotel rooms for fair week and Easter: book early — see Where to Stay.

Common questions

Event questions

What is the biggest festival in Meteora?

Meteora of Art 2026 is the municipal summer programme — 1 June to 30 September, 70+ events across Kalambaka and the Municipality (dimosmeteoron.com announcement 3951-2026-70). The Prophet Elias fair (~19–23 July 2026, feast 20 July) is the main traditional panigyri (meteorapyligeopark.gr). Orthodox Easter is observed annually; dates move.

Is Meteora busy during festival season?

June–September adds concerts and gatherings on top of monastery day-trippers. July’s Prophet Elias fair fills the Kalambaka plateia. Book summer weekends and Orthodox Easter early. Shoulder weeks are quieter at the houses. Last KTEL still does not run late — festival nights need a taxi plan.

Do I need tickets in advance?

Street fairs and many open-air municipal events are walk-up — check the official announcement. Paid concerts may sell seats; use dimosmeteoron.com, not a reseller. Monastery entry is typically €5 cash at the gate, not a festival pass. Easter services need no ticket; arrive early and dress modestly.
